What Is a Modified Container?

A Standard Container, Built Out for Your Needs

A modified shipping container starts with the same Corten steel ISO structure and adds the features that turn it into a functional space. Personnel doors, windows, insulation, electrical, HVAC, custom paint, shelving, flooring: modifications can be as simple or as comprehensive as the project requires. The base unit can be ordered in different grades. See our container condition guide, and our rent vs buy guide if you are weighing how to pay for it.

In Virginia, a modified container can serve as a job site office, a lockable equipment room on a farm or acreage, a cabin base on rural property, or a branded field office that moves between sites.

A modified steel shipping container supplied by Container One, converted with doors, windows, electrical, insulation and finishes, delivered to Virginia addresses from the depot at Norfolk.

Tell us what you need the container to do and where you need to put it. The written quote names the starting unit and the configuration for your property.

Why a Container Instead of Traditional Construction?

  • Modified before it ships, so it arrives finished
  • Built on a shell that is already weatherproof and secure
  • Relocatable, not permanently tied to one site
  • Practical for remote sites a construction crew struggles to reach

Virginia Applications

Ways to Use a Modified Container in Virginia

Hampton Roads Yard and Waterfront Offices

Drayage yards, ship repair operations and construction sites around Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Suffolk work on paved ground with room to maneuver. Specify marine grade paint and pay attention to door gaskets, because salt air is a factor here, and check the tunnel routing before the date is set.

Richmond and Tri-Cities Job Site Offices

Contractors and industrial operations across Henrico, Chesterfield, Hanover and the Tri-Cities can use modified containers as secure offices and tool rooms near the work. Richmond runs about ninety-six miles from the Norfolk depot, and inside the city the things to check are the alley and the overhead utility lines.

Northern Virginia Data Center and Corridor Builds

Electrical and mechanical crews on the Loudoun and Prince William data center corridor can keep a modified container as an office and a secure parts room through builds that run for months. The parkways along the river do not take commercial trucks, so the route and the appointment window get planned together rather than separately.

Valley, Southside and Southwest Virginia Builds

Poultry and orchard operations in the Valley, farm and timber tracts across the Southside, and mountain property out past Wytheville can need a building where there is none. Access can be generous, and the two things to watch are limestone ground along Interstate 81 and a hollow with nowhere to turn a truck around.

The Process

How a Modified Container Order Works

1

Tell Us What You Need

Describe the intended use, the property location, any access constraints, the timeline, and the budget range. Those details let the quote cover the right container and configuration.

2

The Quote Is Prepared

The written quote names the base container, its size and grade, and the modifications, with delivery to your Virginia address included.

3

Order Confirmed and Build Begins

Once the order is confirmed, modifications are completed before delivery. A modified container takes longer than a standard unit, depending on scope and the current build schedule.

4

Delivered to Your Property

The finished container arrives on a tilt-bed truck, the same as a standard delivery, ready to use or close to it depending on the configuration.

FAQ

Modified Container Questions

Personnel doors, windows, roll-up doors, partition walls, electrical with lighting and outlets, HVAC, insulation, interior finishes, shelving and exterior paint. The work is completed before the unit ships, so what arrives is finished rather than a shell you then have to hire out.
From your drawings or your sketch, not from a catalog page. Tell us the base size, what goes in it, whether it needs power and climate control, and where it is going in Virginia. A modified unit is priced as a build, so the number depends on the work rather than on a list price.
The same approach any container of that size needs: 130 feet of straight, level run for a 40ft base and at least 15 feet of height for the truck to drive in and 22 feet of height along the entire unloading path. An electrified build also needs a power source. Confirm the service at the site before you order, because a generator changes the running cost.
Longer than a stock container, because the work happens before the unit ships. Container One's Delivery/Dispatch department schedules delivery after the build, payment and site review.
